Recycled Content
(MR) Credits 4.1 and 4.2

Intent

To increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials. Nucor Gratingsteel products are manufactured exclusively from steel that originate from one of two processes. The first process is a Basic Oxygen Furnac and the other is an Electric Arc Furnace.Aluminum products are manufactured utilizing a high percentage of scrap versus primary raw materials. Each process has pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled content.

Requirements

The following is required by LEED-NC Version 2.2:

Credit 4.1 (1 point) "Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus one-half of the pre-consumer content constitutes at least 10% (based on cost) of the total value of the materials in the project."

Credit 4.2 (1 point) "Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus one-half of the pre-consumer content constitutes at least 20% of the total value of the materials in the project."

“The recycled content value of a material assembly shall be determined by weight. The recycled fraction of the assembly is then multiplied by the cost of assembly to determine the recycled content value.”

    Basic Oxygen Furnace
    Product Recycled Content Value = (Value of Product) (Post-Consumer % + ½ Pre-Consumer %)

      =($10,000) (27.9%)
      =$2,790(Exceeds 10% and 20% goals)

    Electric Arc Furnace
    Product Recycled Content Value = (Value of Product) (Post-Consumer % + ½ Pre-Consumer %)

    Value =($10,000) (56.6% + ½ 32.7%)
      =($10,000) (72.95%)
      =$7,295(Exceeds 10% and 20% goals)

  • Stainless Steel Products (Nickel Institute & International Stainless Steel)

 Raw Material Usage:

  Post-Consumer 25%
  Pre-Consumer 35%

For example for a typical $10,000 aluminum value, the results would be as follows:

Product Recycled Content Value = (Value of Product) (Post-Consumer % + ½ Pre-Consumer %)

Value =($10,000) (25% + ½ 35%)
  =($10,000) (42.5%)
  =$4,250 (Exceeds 10% and 20% goals)

  Pre-Consumer 25%

For example for a typical $10,000 aluminum value, the results would be as follows:

Product Recycled Content Value = (Value of Product) (Post-Consumer % + ½ Pre-Consumer %)

Value =($10,000) (60% + ½ 25%)
  =($10,000) (72.5%)
  =$7,250(Exceeds 10% and 20% goals)
